MOULTONBOROUGH — A one-alarm fire at a Tall Pine Road property Saturday leveled a garage but left the nearby home and vehicle in driveway untouched.

The fire was reported by a watchful neighbor at 1:10 p.m., approximately 15 to 20 minutes after residents of the home located at 34 Tall Pine Road, which is located off Long Island Road, had left, according to David Bengtson, chief of the Moultonborough Fire Department.

The first fire fighters responding to reports of heavy smoke coming from the structure and found the garage engulfed in flames, Bengtson said, adding that a first alarm was then called.

"It we went to first alarm because this is a long way out for us," Bengtson said, noting that although there is a sub station located on Moultonborough Neck Road, it only houses two pieces of equipment.

He said getting water to the scene was not a challenge, as there is hydrant located on Long Island, not far from the entrance to Tall Pine Road.

Speaking at the scene shortly after the fire was out, Bengtson said a cause and point of origin have yet to be determined and may prove a challenge as the single-story structure was leveled.

He said he would need to speak to the home's residents, who hadn't yet returned, to learn more.

Bengtson said the garage contained an approximate 16-foot boat and riding lawn mower, both of which were destroyed in the blaze.

He roughly estimated the damage done to the garage and its contents as costing approximately $30,000.

The single-family home that stood just a few hundred feet from the garage and a pickup truck with Connecticut license plates parked in the snow-covered dirt driveway were undamaged.

Moultonborough firefighters received help at the scene from the Center Harbor, Meredith, Holderness and Tuftonboro Fire Departments.
