The Meredith Public Library is a popular location for town residents, students and others wanting to read or take part in library activities, though some of the regular visitors still stop by even after their deaths.
A team of supernatural investigators recently looked for a ghostly presence at the library after staff members reported odd happenings and the investigators will present their findings at an upcoming event.
Library Director Erin Apostolos said the staff has reported "mysterious things" happening in the library. The stories have included an incident where books that had been shelved a certain way were turned facing in and not out when the staff member walked away and returned a moment later.
In another incident, a worker was hanging components of a projector screen and could not find the remote control necessary to lower the screen. He went away for a moment to find the remote, though he returned to find the screen down.
"He said they really freaked him out," Apostolos said.
Apostolos said the staff learned about the Manchester-based Ghost Quest after seeing them in Borders bookstore in Concord signing copies of their book "Ghost Quest in New Hampshire."
Ghost Quest has conducted investigations of several homes, businesses and institutions around New England. The team includes the work of psychics Raven Duclos and Beckah Boyd and demonologist Katie Boyd. Investigations also include video and audio recording, measuring of temperature and electromagnetic fields and other factors to determine a spirit presence.
"I thought it would be kind of fun to have them come here," she said. "They were very nice people."
A team of paranormal investigators from Ghost Quest visited the library on Aug. 2 for a two-hour investigation. Apostolos said she quietly followed them during their investigation.
Apostolos said the two psychics came in separately and said ghosts were talking to them.
"They were here for maybe two hours," Apostolos said. "They brought video equipment and other equipment."
Members of Ghost Quest will be at the library on Oct. 9 to talk about their findings.
Apostolos said staff members were told there was evidence of a ghostly presence.
"They said all the ghosts that were here were happy to be here," she said.
Library founder and original librarian George Sanborn might be one of the spirits at the library. Apostolos said one of the descriptions given by one of the psychics matched Sanborn's description. Apostolos provided a photo of Sanborn.
"She said 'that's the one I was talking to,'" Apostolos said. "I said 'oh that's the original librarian.'"
Overall the spirits of the library are "very friendly" and library visitors have no reason to fear.
"They just like to play tricks now and then," Apostolos said.
The Ghost Quest presentation will take place on Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the investigators will be available to answer questions and sign books.
