Scenes of Christmas and community fun were the order of the evening during Plymouth's annual Christmas parade and holiday festivities.

On Saturday, several community organizations walked or rode colorful floats down Route 3 through Plymouth.

There was an abundance of children dressed as angels, many Santa Claus hats, and classic Christmas scenes from the Nativity to Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" were on display.

Children were dressed for a Nativity scene as part of the display by Holy Trinity Parish. The National Forest Service brought through forestry trucks, one ridden by Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl. Large ice-cream cones and candy were on the float by Sweet Kathy's Ice Cream Parlor.

Participants in Jazzercise did their routine down the road with an instructor on a microphone giving direction through speakers on the back of a truck.

Local lawmakers state Sen. Deb Reynolds and Executive Councilor Ray Burton also walked in the parade, braving the cold to wave to their constituents.

The Belmont High School Band and the Baker Valley Band in a trailer lit with Christmas lights provided music. The Plymouth Regional High School Cheerleaders and the Plymouth Regional Huskies also made appearances.

The parade was capped off by Santa riding in on the back of a Plymouth fire truck with his head elf.

Members of the Rotary Club served food to those in attendance. A large bonfire was set up to keep paradegoers warm and visitors were also treated to a fireworks display over the Pemigewasset River.

Santa appeared at the depot on Green Street and children lined up for a moment with him.

Also in the depot was the Festival of Trees featuring trees decorated by Plymouth State University students and the Red Hat Society as well as trees with themes from TV shows among others.

Robin and Shawn Goodwin of Thornton were in line for Santa Claus with Robin Goodwin's daughters Shelby and Reannen.

"She's in line to tell Santa she wants jelly beans," Shawn Goodwin said about two-year-old Reannen Benton. "She loved the parade."

The Goodwin's said they seek out family-friendly holiday activities, as there are few things to do in Thornton. Their next holiday activity will be the events in Bristol next week.
