TILTON — With the major track meets right around the corner, the Prospect Mountain girls and Franklin boys flexed their muscle in taking the top spots at the Central Cluster meet hosted here by Winnisquam Tuesday afternoon.
Prospect Mountain put together a dominating performance in recording 179 points to easily outdistance the field in the seven-school meet. Following the Timberwolves were Winnisquam (93), Gilford (80), Belmont (67), Sant Bani (50), Franklin (22), and Laconia Christian (10).
Caitlin Hussey and Danielle Tidd took first place in two events for Prospect. Hussey won the shot put and discus events, while Tidd placed first in the high jump and pole vault. Amanda Macaione had a big day with three top three finishes, placing first in the 100 while taking second in the 200 and third in the high jump.
Erica Clemons placed first in the 200 and took third in the 100. Karalee Jannini took second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100H.
Also winning events for Prospect were Kim Sykes (800) and Kelsey Hannafin (triple jump). Prospect also captured first in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay events. Megan Farrell was third in the 1600 and Kaitlyn Lacrouse placed third in the TJ.
Winnisquam's solid showing was paced by Samantha Persson, who won the javelin event and placed second in the shot put along with a third in discus. Jessie Pearce won the 3200, while Taylor O'Connor took second in the 400. Posting third place finishes were Naomi Brown (100), Sophia Gourgiotis (javelin), and Shawna Kilcoyne (pole vault).
The Bears also took second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x400.
Heather Lakin (2nd 100, 3rd long jump) and Sarah Ayers (2nd javelin, 3rd shot put) led the way for Gilford. Victoria Reinheimer was second in pole vault and Rachel Colbath took second in the 3200, while Lynsey Tyler placed third in the 800.
Gilford's 4x100 relay placed third.
Belmont's Joy Piper won the 100 hurdles and 300H. Chelsea Borden took second in 100 hurdles, while Erin Phillips finished second in the 1600 and Annie Roberts was second in the discus. The Belmont 4x400 relay was second.
Sant Bani was paced by Mira Carey-Hatch, who won the 1600 and took second in the 800. Leah Peters won the 400, while Taylar Clark took second in the TJ and Hannah Gilb was second in the LJ.
Franklin's Jennifer Daniel captured first in the long jump, while Naomi Fifield was second in the HJ. Laconia Christian's Leslie Howard placed third in the 400.
In the boys meet, Franklin recorded 129 points to best Belmont (123). Following were Winnisquam (78.5), Prospect Mountain (75), Sant Bani (63), Gilford (31.5), and Laconia Christian (17).
Brantley Farris and Kris Dumont both won three events, while Matt Kaplan took first in two events to pace the Franklin charge to the top spot. Farris placed first in the 110H, 300H, and pole vault. Dumont took first in the TJ, LJ, and HJ. Kaplan was first in the shot put and discus.
Ryan Yonaitus won the javelin, while Patrick Mosa finished second in the LJ and third in the HJ. Tim Player placed second in the discus and Grayson Searl was third in the 100. Franklin also took second in the 4x100 relay.
Belmont was paced by Ben Winchell, who won the 100 and 200-meter events and placed third in the long jump. Dan Sullivan placed second in both hurdle events, while Tim Gurshin placed second in the 3200 and third in the 1600. Andrew Norkiewicz was first in the 3200, while Graham Hayslip finished second in the 1600. Third place finishes were posted by Luke Robichaud (800), Brendan McCauley (3200), and Dan Loring (javelin).
The Red Raiders also placed first in the 4x400 relay and took third in the 4x100.
Drew Stock placed first in the 400, and finished third in the 200 and pole vault events for Winnisquam. Ethan Shea was second in the javelin and third in the shot put. Dave Andrus placed second in the HJ and Alex Roy took second in the pole vault. Winnisquam's 4x400 relay came in second.
Prospect Mountain's Isaac Fithian placed first in the 800 and 1600 races. Joe Rogers was second in the 100 and 200 events, while Greg Tinkham took third in the 300H and Adam Cheney was third in the 110H.
For Sant Bani, Alec Peters was second in the 400 and 800 events while Ben Pollak took second in the TJ and third in the 400m. Dave Sell placed third in the TJ, while the Sant Bani 4x400 relay was third. Gilford's Jordan Corry took second in shot put and third in the discus.
Newfound boys take Cluster Meet
BRISTOL — The Newfound Regional track and field team continued its strong spring Tuesday, taking first overall in its own NRHS Cluster Meet.
The Bears topped the seven-team meet with 137 points, topping second-place White Mountains (123). Inter-Lakes was third with 107 points. Moultonborough (13) was seventh.
Junior distance runner Zach Morel paced the Bears with a pair of top finishes, taking first in the 3200- and 1600-meter events. Newfound got four first-place showings in all. Chris Plankey won the 800-meter run and Steven Guyotte in the 200-meter sprint. Plankey and Guyotte added respective fourth and fifth showings in the 100-meter sprint.
Frank Roach was fifth in both the javelin and high jump events and first in the pole vault. Kerry Mattson was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the 800-meter run. Also scoring for Newfound were Riley Smith (second, high hurdles), T.J. Taverna (third, high hurdles), Calvin Leach (foruth, 200m), Derek Mitchell (sixth, high jump), Fisher Bourbeau (fourth, shot put), Dustin Sewall (second, 800m), Tyler Parker (fourth, 800m), Tyler Short (fourth, long jump), Jake Morel (sixth, triple jump) and Jake Lundberg (sixth, 800m).
Inter-Lakes got a pair of first-place finishes from Nate Clive, who took the 400- and 100-meter sprints. Sam Callesano also had a big day, taking second in both the 300-meter hurdles and long jump events, third in the 100-meter sprint and fourth in the high hurdles. Senior thrower Tom Lehmann was fourth in the javelin and fifth in the shot put. Matt Sleeper was first in the long jump and third in the high jump and Adam Merkwan was third in the 800-meter run and sixth in the long jump. Other scorers for Inter-Lakes included Tanner Quinney (third, javelin), Matt Otis (third, triple jump), and Josh Nelson (fifth, 1600m).
I-Lakes won both relay races with Newfound second in each.
White Mountains took the girls meet with 130 points, topping Berlin's 103. Moultonborough and Newfound tied for third with 87 points. Inter-Lakes was sixth with 30.
Newfound's Abby Erler was first in both the 800-meter run and the pole vault. Emma Erler was fifth in the 100-meter sprint and second in the 200-meter sprint. Meagan Patten was first in the shot put, fourth in the javelin and fifth in the discus. Kacy Cunningham was second in the 3200-meter run and sixth in the 800-meter run. Also scoring for the Newfound girls were Cailey Newton (third, javelin), Charissa Plummer (third, 1600m), Katie Dorey (fourth, 400m), Danielle DeVost (fifth, high hurdles), Lydia Whitmore (fifth, 400m), Morgan MacDonald (fifth, javelin), Alyssa Albert (sixth, high jump), and Alex Jewell (sixth, triple jump).
MA's Denise Malm was first in the 300-meter hurdles, second in the high hurdles and third in the long jump. Lauren McKinley was first in the triple jump, followed by Brianna McKinley in second. Chelsey Parks won the long jump and took third in the high jump.
Kira Goodheart was third in the high hurdles and fifth in both the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump for Inter-Lakes. Hannah Roberg was fourth in the 300-hurdles and sixth in the high hurdles. The Lakers also got points from Erika Porter (second, discus), Abby Davis (sixth, 1600m) and Chloe Swift (fifth, 800m).
Baseball
Laconia 1, Bishop Brady 0
LACONIA — One day after being blanked 1-0, the Sachems came back to turn the trick on Bishop Brady in Class I action Tuesday afternoon.
Ian Harris went the distance for the win and Travis Knowlton provided the run with a solo home run, one of Laconia's two hits on the afternoon. Harris scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out two and walking one in notching the shutout.
"We made the defensive plays behind him," Laconia coach Tim Steuer said. "We made all the plays in the infield and outfield, and we didn't allow a runner past second base."
Knowlton ripped the first pitch he saw in the second inning over the fence in left-center field. Nolan Canfield had Laconia's other hit, a triple in the third inning.
Laconia plays host to Kingswood this afternoon (3:15).
Hanover 12, Plymouth 5
PLYMOUTH — The Bobcats slipped to 9-4 as Hanover belted four home runs, including two two-run bombs, to hand host Plymouth a tough 12-5 Class I setback.
Hanover took a 4-0 lead after four innings with two-run homers in the first and fourth frames. The Marauders opened up a 10-0 lead with a six-run fifth inning. Plymouth responded with three in the home half of the fifth. Colin Hay started the rally with a one-out single. Kevin Reisert and Richie Manzi drew walks to load the bases. Trevor Bladecki knocked in two runs with a sharp single, and Wes Cushing had an RBI fielder's choice.
Plymouth tacked on solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Matt Varin belted a home run in the sixth and Bladecki had an RBI single in the seventh. Bladecki went 3 for 4 with three RBI to pace Plymouth's 11-hit attack. Varin finished 2-4, with a run scored and RBI.
Kyle McAuliffe went the first five innings and suffered the loss. John Bowman tossed an inning as did Travis Cook.
The Bobcats visit Lebanon this afternoon (4:30).
Softball
Plymouth 14, Hanover 0
PLYMOUTH — Courtney DeCosta and Stacey Howard had two hits and two RBI apiece, and Alisha Barney tossed a three-hitter as the Bobcats moved to 9-4 with a convincing victory over Hanover.
Barney allowed just three hits, while striking out six, walking two and hitting a batter. Brittany Paquette pitched a hitless inning to close out the win.
Also contributing to the offensive attack were Adrienne Campbell (double, 2 RBI) and Jessica Burgess (single, 2 RBI).
Plymouth travels to Lebanon today.
Girls Tennis
Plymouth 6, Kearsarge 3
PLYMOUTH — The Bobcats closed their season in Class I on a high note, getting wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to end at 10-4. Plymouth finished the year by winning three of its final four matches.
"Couldn't have been better," coach Barb Willett said of the finish. "It was as nice as the weather."
Kearsarge's only wins came from its top two players. Plymouth got singles wins from No. 3 Sam Lally (8-2), No. 4 Taylor Lyford (8-4), No. 5 Andra Dion (8-0) and No. 6 Isabel Rollison (8-2). The Bobcats led 4-2 entering doubles and clinched the match with wins at No. 2 by Lally and Rollison and No. 3 by Lyford and Dion.
Plymouth No. 1 Kate Furbush fell 8-0 and No. 2 Emily Parker lost 8-4. Furbush and Parker were then beat 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Bobcats got wins from No. 3 through No. 6 on their ladder for the first time all season to salvage the victory.

Gilford 6, Prospect 0

GILFORD — Gilford improved to 11-1 in Class M-S Monday, sweeping a double header against a short-handed Prospect Mountain team.
The Timberwolves only had five players make the trip, causing them to begin the match down 2-0 due to forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Gilford swept through to win the first match, getting victories from No. 1 Ethan Simoneau (8-0), No. 2 Tyler Murphy (8-0), No. 3 Bryan Stewart (8-0) and No. 4 Ian Rice (8-2).
The second match was more of the same. Simoneau (8-0), Murphy (8-1), Stewart (8-0), Rice (8-0) and No. 5 Andrew Kwist (8-0) all posted singles triumphs. The Eagles then got doubles wins from reserves Parker Raus and Mike Workman (8-0) at No. 1 and Spencer Klubben and Andrew Cohan (8-2) at No. 2.
Gilford wraps up its regular season today, hosting Moultonborough.
