Downtown Belmont was filled with fun, food and good times on Friday evening as people from the community came out to the Parks and Recreation Department's Sargent Park Night.

The town of Belmont sponsored the evening as a way to bring the community together and it drew crowds in by the dozen.

Janet Breton, director of the Belmont Parks and Recreation Department, said the police department used to put the evening on but Parks and Recreation has been in charge of setting up the event in recent years.

"This is just a night to come out and have some fun," said Breton. "We hope families enjoy coming to the park with their children and have a good time."

Breton said she would like to have such events once a month during the summer.

Food and treats were being served at the event, with hot dogs and hamburgers bringing smiles to the little ones' faces while the live music had some people tapping their feet and moving their hips.

The Belmont Elementary Parent-Teachers Organization, B.E.S.T., was there, selling food to help raise money for enrichment programs. Parents from the school donated baked goods to sell while other B.E.S.T. members volunteered their time to help sell the goodies on Friday.

"What a fantastic event!" said Barbara Ribeiro, president of B.E.S.T. "This is exactly what we work toward; it's great to see families together out here."

Ribeiro said bringing the community together at an event such as this is very important to the B.E.S.T. group. All money raised by B.E.S.T on Friday evening will go directly back to the school in the way of funding enrichment programs and purchasing other items needed throughout the year.

Also among those present was artist Karol DiPietro who was doing face-painting, along with members from the Belmont Rotary Club. Serving up cotton candy was Rotary member Don Mitchell who was more than happy to be there.

"This brings the community together and promotes the youth of the park," said Mitchell. "It's good for parents to be with their children and it gives them something they can do together."

Live music was provided by the locally known band No Limitz which rocked the park with classic rock 'n roll hits. Band members included Jim Tyrrell on keyboard, Steve Answorth on bass guitar, Stephen Hinchey on guitar and Norm Breton on drums.

"It's a good time," said Tyrrell. "We always enjoy doing things like this and the people seem like they are having a good time tonight so far."

No Limitz played throughout the evening, performing hits from such bands as Journey, Styx, Jimmy Buffett, and the Beatles.

Attendees bundled up after the sun set and brought lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the music and an evening with their loved ones.
