WATERVILLE VALLEY — Freshman Katie Little scored six goals Friday evening to lead Manhattanville College to a 12-0 victory over Plymouth State University in ECAC Women's East ice hockey action at Waterville Valley Arena.
Little, who tallied four goals in Manhattanville's first three games, exploded for two goals in each period against the Panthers. Classmate Ella Hubley added a pair of goals and freshman Jessica Kehoe chipped in with a goal and three assists as the Valiants improved to 3-1 on the season.
Manhattanville put the game away in the first period with four unanswered goals. Little notched a pair, including one short-handed, and Hubley and freshman Lynsey Schill each scored once. It turned into a runaway in the second period with five Valiant goals, two more from Little and one apiece from Hubley and freshmen Erin Sidjak and Mary Rose Morrison Little added two more in the final frame, and Kehoe finished off the scoring in the final minute.
The Valiants finished with a 46-10 advantage in shots on goal. PSU sophomore Nicole Provencher finished with 34 saves in the Panther net. Manhattanville split the shutout among three goaltenders, with senior Sophia Kokkonis, sophomore Kimmy Flanders and freshman Emy Cote each playing one period.
Manhattanville moves on to the University of Southern Maine Saturday, Nov. 21, for a 1 p.m. ECAC East match-up. PSU, 0-5, plays its final home game of the first semester in its next outing on Friday, Dec. 4, against Saint Anselm College.
UNH volleyball falls to Binghamton
ALBANY, N.Y. — Lindsay Fogarty registered a team-high 10 kills, however the University of New Hampshire volleyball team closed out the 2009 season with a 3-0 loss to third-seeded Binghamton University in the semifinals of the America East Championship held at Albany's University Gymnasium.
Binghamton, which improves to 14-15 overall, advances to play top-seeded Albany in the America East Championship title match. UNH closes out the 2009 campaign 13-15 overall.
Fogarty also added 10 digs, pair of aces and hit at a .135 clip. In addition to Fogarty, Kirsten Bates and Justine Elliott each tallied six kills. Bates was also one of three Wildcats with double figure digs with 10, while Sara Heldman had a team-high 14 digs. Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) paced the UNH offensive attack with 28 assists.
The Wildcats opened up a 6-1 lead in the opening set that was erased by a 6-1 run which tied it at 7-7. The teams battled back-and-forth with UNH slowly building an 18-14. Binghamton responded with eight-straight points to take a 22-18 lead and went on to capture the set 25-21. Binghamton jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set and expanded its lead to 15-8. UNH would cut into the lead getting as close as four at 18-14, but the Bearcats went on to capture the middle set 25-17. Binghamton hit at a match-best .355 clip in the set with 13 kills. In the third set, the Bearcats went out to a 7-3 lead. New Hampshire trailed 17-10 before rattling off six-straight points to make it 17-16. However, Binghamton sealed the set and the match by scoring eight of the final 12 points of the match. The Wildcats had 11 errors in the final set, while each team recorded 11 kills.
The match was the final one for seniors Bates, Fogarty, Uitti and Kelly Harte (East Rochester).
UNH men's basketball falls to Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Senior Colbey Santos scored 14 points for UNH as the Wildcats fell to 25th-ranked University of Maryland in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,180 at the Comcast Center on Friday night.
The Wildcats even their record at 1-1 on the young season, while the Atlantic Coast Conference-member Terrapins remain perfect at 3-0.
Santos scored all 14 of his points in the second half on 5 of 10 shooting, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc.
Senior Radar Onguetou and junior Alvin Abreu each added nine points for the Wildcats.
Landon Millbourne led the Terps with 24 points, while Eric Hayes and Sean Mosley added 15 and 13, respectively.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. when they head to Lavietes Pavillion to take on Harvard University.
PSU's Duval named to All-NE team
BOSTON, Mass. — Thirty-one players representing 20 different teams have been named to the 2009 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England team.
The All-Star team includes Plymouth State University offensive tackle Zac Duval (Dover), who last week was named New England Football Conference First Team All-Star and Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Bentley College leads the team with four selections. New England Small College Athletic Conference champion Amherst College has three picks, as does Northeast–10 champion Merrimack College. Westfield State College, Norwich University, Assumption College, and Springfield College each placed two players on the team. Also named to the squad were players from American International College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Bridgewater State College, Curry College, Endicott College, Maine Maritime Academy, MIT, Middlebury College, Plymouth State University, Southern Connecticut State University, and St. Anselm College.
The Division II Northeast-10 Conference had 12 players selected, while from Division III the New England Football Conference had eight picks. The New England Small College Athletic Conference had six representatives, while the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, in its first year of existence, had three selections. Two players came from independent institutions.
