DURHAM — Kelly Paton scored three goals and assisted on another to propel the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's hockey team past Rennselaer (N.Y.), 4-3, in non-conference action Saturday night at the Whittemore Center.
UNH, which netted the last three goals of the game to erase a 3-1 deficit, extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (4-0-3) to improve to 9-1-4 overall. RPI is now 4-7-4.
It was the second career hat trick for Paton, who also matched her personal best of four points. Kristina Lavoie tallied career highs in both assists and points with her one-goal, two-assist effort. UNH goaltender Lindsey Minton finished with 18 saves, including eight in the second period.
Alisa Harrison (two goals) and Allison Wright (goal, assist) led the Engineers' offense, and goalie Sonja van der Bliek stopped 21 shots, including 12 in the middle stanza.
UNH is at Northeastern next Sunday.
UNH men's hockey
BOSTON – The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team's top line combined for three goals and four assists in Saturday night's 3-3 tie with Boston University in Hockey East action at Agganis Arena.
With the deadlock, UNH moved to 4-6-3 overall with a 4-2-2 mark in Hockey East, while BU fell to 3-7-1, 2-6-1. The Wildcats improved to 4-1-3 all time at Agganis Arena.
Derry's Paul Thompson potted a pair of goals and an assist, Phil DeSimone had a goal and an assist, while Bobby Butler notched helpers on all three goals for the Wildcats. In addition, Pembroke's Brian Foster stopped 34 shots, including 15 in the third and overtime combined, and improved his record to 4-6-3 overall.
UNH was 1 for 6 on the power play, while the Terriers were 1-2 in their extra-skater opportunities. UNH is at Merrimack on Saturday.
PSU football falls in ECAC Northeast Bowl
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Springfield College rolled up 464 yards of offense and scored touchdowns on four straight possessions in the second quarter Saturday afternoon en route to a 42-13 victory over Plymouth State University in the ECAC Northeast Bowl at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
Plymouth State finished at 8-3. The highlights for the Panthers included a 27-yard touchdown pass from former Winnacunnet High School standout J.J. Brooks to John Creamer early in the second quarter that pulled PSU to within seven points at 14-7. Jon Brennan found the end zone from 1 yard out to close out the scoring.
PSU men's basketball
NORTON, Mass. — The Plymouth State University men's basketball team fell to Wheaton (Mass.) 66-60 Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Lambert scored 10 points with six rebounds off the bench, while former Portsmouth standout Tom Dowd scored 12 points. Jason O'Keefe added 11, and Mike Chergey added 10. The Panthers turned in a 1-of-15 showing on three-pointers.
PSU, 2-1 overall, plays its home opener on Tuesday against Castleton (Vt.) State.
PSU women's basketball
CASTINE, Maine — Kalie Judd stuffed the stat sheet scoring 12 points with six rebounds, four assists and five steals leading the Plymouth State University womens' basketball team to a 75-48 victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday.
Amanda Kania had a team high 19 points and 10 rebounds while Alicia Doucet and Laura Kent each contributed nine points.
PSU men's hockey
WATERVILLE VALLEY — Erik Shields of Lebanon, Maine, stopped all 34 shots he faced Saturday night to lead the Plymouth State University men's hockey team to a 3-0 win over UMass-Dartmouth at Waterville Valley Arena.
Bryan Kriner, Seth Phelan and Sean Buckley scored the PSU goals.
Plymouth State returns to action on Dec. 2, when it visits Southern New Hampshire.
