A road made slick by light snow and ice was responsible for a one-vehicle accident Thursday that briefly sent a New Hampton woman and her young daughter to the hospital.

Jennifer Dutton, 35, of 546 Winona Road, was driving a blue 2000 Jeep Cherokee four-door on Bartlett Hill Road shortly before noon on Thursday when she crested a small hill heading toward Waukewan Road and lost control as a result of the slick conditions, Center Harbor Police Chief Mark Chase said.

The sport utility vehicle went off the left side of the road and struck a tree at the entrance to 92 Bartlett Hill Road and then bounced backward into the road.

A motorist who came upon the crash attempted to brake to avoid the Jeep and also ended up sliding off the road, but it did not cause any damage to his truck, which was towed out by wrecker, Chase said.

The speed limit on the rural road that stretches from the Meredith transfer station to Waukewan Golf Course is 30 miles per hour.

Chase said Dutton was wearing a seat belt and her four-year-old daughter was properly restrained in car seat in the back seat of the vehicle.

The family's Labrador retriever, also a passenger in the vehicle, was not hurt.

Chase said the SUV's airbags deployed, prompting the initial caller to erroneously report that the vehicle was on fire.

The Center Harbor Fire Department and Stewart's Ambulance assisted local police at the scene.
