The playoff push

Randy Booth

It wasn't long ago the 2012 spring sports season started on time.

No snow. No delays. Just a little rain here and there.

Now, it's playoff season.

The shortest high school sports season of the year is coming to a close over the next few weeks. In fact, there are only two Lakes Region tennis teams still alive in the playoffs. The third-seeded Gilford boys tennis team travels to play No. 2 Profile today, while the Golden Eagle girls -- the No. 2 seed -- host No. 3 Bow on Friday.

Baseball, softball, lacrosse and track and field wrap up their regular seasons this week.

Here's how the playoffs (or championships) will work for our remaining sports:

  • The Division III track & field championship is Saturday at Newfound Regional High School. D-II will be in Milford, also on Saturday.
  • D-III baseball and softball will feature its "play-in" round Sunday at 4 p.m. Sunday's schedule will be announced Friday, as well as the rest of the tournament seedings.
  • The prelims for D-II baseball start next Thursday. D-II softball starts Wednesday. D-IV baseball and softball are on the same schedule as D-III.
  • D-III boys lacrosse playoffs start Tuesday, with D-III girls lacrosse starting Wednesday. However, D-III boys lacrosse has an extra round to its playoff system. Girls lacrosse starts with the quarterfinals and just eight teams.
